Chapter 9 does not operate by itself.
Before designing a specific appliance, identify the correct code path first. Gas-fired appliances are International Fuel Gas Code. Fireplaces and solid-fuel appliances are prohibited in hazardous locations and in Group I-2, Condition 2 occupancies. Original Masterbuild writing from Daily Code Talk #167.

- 901.1: Chapter 9 governs the appliances identified in the chapter, including factory-built fireplaces. Appearing in Chapter 9 does not make the IMC the complete path.
- 901.2: Chapter 9 applies in addition to the other applicable IMC requirements — location, installation, venting, listing.
- 901.3: fireplaces and solid-fuel-burning appliances are prohibited in hazardous locations.
- 901.4: solid-fuel-burning fireplaces and appliances are prohibited in Group I-2, Condition 2 occupancies.

If the appliance is already on the schedule and the path is not
Send the cut sheet, the fuel, and the occupancy. Masterbuild will say whether Chapter 9 still has no row — not whether the AHJ will accept a substitution.
