Chapter 8 focused on chimneys, vents, and connectors. Chapter 9 shifts the review to the equipment itself. The engineer now has to ask: what exactly is being installed, what code path governs it, and what other disciplines does it trigger?
What Chapter 9 covers
Fireplaces and solid-fuel appliances. Cooling towers, evaporative condensers and fluid coolers. Wall, floor, duct and unit heaters. Clothes dryers. Sauna heaters. Engines and gas turbines. Pool and spa heaters. Cooking appliances. Forced-air furnaces. Fuel cells and hydrogen systems. Radiant heating. Evaporative cooling. Large-diameter ceiling fans. Steam bath equipment.
Chapter 9 is often only one stop
A section may send you to another IMC chapter; IBC, IFC, IFGC or IPC requirements; a referenced NFPA, UL, ASTM or ANSI/CSA standard; equipment listing and labeling; and manufacturer installation instructions.
Why it matters
A missing clearance can affect architecture. A cooling tower can affect structure, plumbing, and intake location. A heater can create occupancy restrictions. A fuel cell or hydrogen system can trigger a broader life-safety review path. The permit set has to show the full path, not just the Chapter 9 section number.
Review mindset
Identify the exact appliance or equipment type. Confirm the governing code path. Check listing and manufacturer requirements. Identify occupancy or location restrictions. Coordinate access, support, utilities and clearances. Show critical criteria where the contractor and reviewer can verify them.
Field tip
