If you bury it first, you will open it later.
IMC 111: an approval never legalizes a violation. If you bury it before the inspector sees it, expect demo. Inspection failures are sequencing failures.
Educational 2024 IMC 111. Confirm adopted edition and the AHJ request method. This is not an inspection schedule. Do not assume a universal 24- or 48-hour notice, and do not assume a universal 48-hour heater exception.
- 111.1: permit work stays visible and accessible until approved.
- 111.2: confirm every locally required stage before concealment. Typical sequence on drawings: underground → rough-in → final, plus special inspections. Any exception allowing limited operation before inspection must be confirmed with this AHJ.
- 111.2.2–111.2.3: the permit holder schedules inspections and provides safe access. The permit holder — or an authorized representative who can answer technical questions — should be present. Noncompliant portions stay exposed until corrected.
- 111.2.4: third-party reports only from an agency specifically approved by this AHJ. 111.2.5 prefabricated assemblies: evaluation report required; keep factory follow-up records available.
- 111.3: the permit holder tests; the AHJ witnesses; the permit holder provides equipment and labor. Fail → correct → resubmit.
Covered before the call
Three patterns: concealing before the inspector arrives; skipping rough-in and going underground to final; showing up for a witnessed test without the instruments or the prefab evaluation report on site.
