Hazardous exhaust is not a plenum shortcut.
IMC 509 is not general exhaust. It is a contained life-safety path for flammable, toxic, or corrosive emissions. Trigger basis, routing, and penetrations have to be on the drawings — or it becomes a field redesign.
Educational 2024 IMC 509. Confirm adopted edition, SDS, and AHJ. This is not a hazardous-exhaust design.
- Trigger (509.1–509.2): ops that could create >25% LFL (flammables, normal conditions); NFPA 704 health-hazard 4 at any concentration; health-hazard 1–3 above 1% LC50. Labs have a limited exception with strict thresholds.
- 509.3: keep flammables in exhaust below 25% LFL via dilution.
- 509.4: incompatible materials cannot share a system. No common shafts with other ducts (lab exception only with negative pressure, controls, limits, redundant fans).
- 509.5: capture at the source. Makeup air ≈ exhaust, interlocked, intakes per 401.4. Direct to outdoors — not through plenums. Fire/smoke dampers prohibited. Fire walls: no penetration.
- 509.7–509.9: suppression generally required (exceptions, including labs as defined). Explosion relief/prevention per NFPA 69 when applicable. Supports ≤ 10 ft.
- IMC 510.1.3 recirculation 3-part check.
Plenum shortcut / shared shaft
Value-engineering 509 into general exhaust, a shared shaft, or a damper is the comment. Document TRIGGER + CAPTURE + NO MIXING + DIRECT TO OUTDOORS + NO DAMPERS + SHAFT + MUA INTERLOCK + SUPPRESSION/EXCEPTION + NFPA 69.
