The fan can be the ignition source.
IMC 503: a fan in hazardous exhaust is part of the safety system. Wrong motor, no interlock, or sparking construction can turn mitigation into an ignition source.
Educational 2024 IMC 503. Confirm adopted edition, electrical classification, and listing. This is not a fan selection.
- Size for required airflow; provide service access. In flammable vapor/dust areas, motors must be approved for that environment.
- Remote manual shutoff for fans in flammable vapor/dust systems. Process equipment that generates explosive/flammable vapors or dust must be interlocked so it cannot run unless the exhaust fans are on.
- Motors outside the duct, or shielded and dust-tight, for systems conveying flammable vapors/dusts.
- Parts in contact with explosive/flammable vapors/dusts: nonferrous or nonsparking, or casing lined with nonsparking material. Bearings out of the airstream. Spark-resistant fans grounded.
- Materials that clog blades, and buffing/woodworking exhaust: radial-blade or tube-axial fans.
- ID plate stating the ventilation rate the system was designed for. Corrosives: corrosion-resistant construction or coating.
“Explosion-proof” is not a Class/Division/Group
The schedule must state the hazard classification and the listing that matches it. Mechanical and electrical have to agree before permit — not at inspection.
