One header for everything is not 509.4.
IMC 509.4 is the “do not mix” rule. If the International Fire Code (IFC) says two materials are incompatible, they cannot share a hazardous-exhaust system. Hazardous exhaust cannot share a common shaft with other duct systems — toilet, relief, return, kitchen — except when the shared shaft contains only hazardous exhaust originating in the same fire area. Lab manifolding is an exception with a checklist. Perchloric-acid hoods are not manifolded. Period.

- Incompatible materials cannot share a system. IFC incompatibility is the test — not “we put a filter on it.”
- No common shafts with other duct systems. Only allowed when the shared shaft contains hazardous exhaust originating in the same fire area.
- Lab exception — all of these: (1) negative pressure on all lab exhaust ductwork in occupied space and shaft while operating; (2) manifolded ductwork in the occupied space originates in the same fire area; (3) different fire areas in a common shaft comply with IBC 717.5.3 Exception 1 Item 1.1; (4) a flow-regulating device on each control branch; (5) no perchloric-acid hoods manifolded; (6) radioisotope hoods: filtration/carbon beds where the design professional requires them; (7) biological safety cabinets: filtered; (8) redundant exhaust fans for each hazardous-exhaust duct system — either parallel fans running simultaneously, each capable of the full required exhaust, or lead/lag so one runs if the other fails or is shut down for service.
On the set: M-001 “incompatible materials separated, no shared shafts, NO PERCHLORIC ACID MANIFOLDING.” One-line diagram: which hoods/branches manifold, branch regulators, shaft routing by fire area. Controls: redundant-fan sequence (parallel vs lead/lag) and failure switchover narrative. Biggest failures: “one header for everything,” shared shafts with toilet/relief/return, manifolds with no redundancy, prohibited hood types tied in.
One header for everything
Or a perchloric hood on a lab manifold. Or a toilet riser in the same shaft as fume-hood exhaust. Those are first-cycle comments and IFC conflicts — not a coordination note.
