“Exhaust per code” is not a 502.8 design.
If hazardous materials are stored or used above the Maximum Allowable Quantity (MAQ), you owe dedicated hazmat exhaust — or proven natural ventilation — for storage rooms, gas rooms, and use areas. IMC 502.8.1: at least 1 cfm/ft², typically continuous, with an emergency shutoff switch outside the room. Pickup low for heavy vapors, high for light ones. Do not recirculate contaminated air to occupied spaces. “EXHAUST PER CODE” with no MAQ check is a fast way to stall review.
Educational 2024 International Mechanical Code (IMC) 502.8–502.10 from Daily Code Talk. Confirm the adopted edition. Distinct from 509 hazardous exhaust and 509.4 shafts. This is not a hazmat inventory or a fire-code determination.
- 502.8: over MAQ → dedicated hazmat exhaust (or proven natural) for storage rooms, gas rooms, and use areas.
- 502.8.1 storage over MAQ: ≥ 1 cfm/ft², typically continuous, emergency shutoff outside the room. Pickup height matches vapor density. No recirculation of contaminated air to occupied spaces.
- 502.8.2–502.8.5: gas rooms, exhausted enclosures, and gas cabinets run negative to adjacent spaces. Indoor dispensing/use over MAQ needs general exhaust and local capture per NFPA 704. On the hazmat diamond, 3 = serious and 4 = severe/extreme — those trigger local capture at the point of generation.
- 502.9 specific materials (medical gases, corrosives, cryogenics, flammable liquids, highly toxic, ozone, LP-gas, silane, and others): many require 1 cfm/ft², 200 fpm face velocity, and/or scrubbers per the International Fire Code (IFC).
- 502.10 HPM (Hazardous Production Materials): exhaust at fabrication areas, workstations, liquid storage rooms, HPM rooms, gas rooms, gas cabinets, and exhausted enclosures per IMC / IBC / IFC. Hazmat/HPM exhaust ducts that cross rated assemblies go in rated shafts. No fire dampers.
On the set: M-001 with MAQ trigger, ≥ 1 cfm/ft², continuous/automatic, emergency shutoff, pickup height, “NO RECIRCULATION OF CONTAMINATED AIR.” M-601: room, material class, MAQ status, exhaust basis (cfm/ft² or fpm), pickup height, treatment (Y/N), code reference. Inventory and occupancy classification belong in the permit set — a placeholder note is better than silence, but review will not finish without the inventory.
A fire damper in an HPM shaft, or recirc back to occupied space
Or no emergency shutoff outside the door. Or NFPA 704 ratings of 3–4 with no local capture. Coordinate MAQ with architecture and fire protection before the first submittal.

What to send
Whether quantities are over MAQ (or the inventory if you have it), NFPA 704 ratings if known, whether exhaust is dedicated to outdoors, and whether any fire damper is shown on that duct.
If the set says “exhaust per code” with no MAQ check
Send the inventory — or a list of what is stored. Masterbuild will say whether 502.8 still has no 1 cfm/ft² path — or 502.10 still has a fire damper in the shaft.
