Plain English:
502.8 hazmat general: If hazardous materials are stored/used above the MAQ, you owe dedicated hazmat exhaust (or proven natural) for storage rooms, gas rooms, and use areas.
502.8.1 storage over MAQ: Provide >=1 cfm/ft^2, typically continuous, with an EMERGENCY SHUTOFF switch outside the room. Place pickups low for heavy vapors, high for light ones, and do not recirculate contaminated air to occupied spaces.
502.8.2-502.8.5 gas rooms and use areas: Gas rooms, exhausted enclosures, and gas cabinets must run negative to adjacent spaces. Indoor dispensing/use over MAQ needs general exhaust and local capture per NFPA 704
NFPA 704 hazard ranking 3-4: On the "hazmat diamond," 3 = serious hazard and 4 = severe/extreme. Those materials trigger local capture at the point of generation.
502.9 specific materials: Adds extra rules for medical gases, corrosives, cryogenics, flammable/combustible liquids, highly toxic/toxic liquids and gases, ozone, LP-gas, silane, etc. Many require 1 cfm/ft^2, 200 fpm face velocity, and/or scrubbers per IFC.
502.10 HPM: In HPM occupancies, provide exhaust at fabrication areas, workstations, liquid storage rooms, HPM rooms, gas rooms, gas cabinets, and exhausted enclosures per IMC/IBC/IFC. Hazmat/HPM exhaust ducts crossing rated assemblies go in rated shafts; no fire dampers.
On Plans: Why it matters
Hazmat/HPM exhaust is always a combined IMC + IFC + IBC problem. "EXHAUST PER CODE" with no MAQ check, no cfm/ft^2, no negative pressure, and no treatment plan is a fast way to stall review.

M-101: Tag hazmat rooms, gas rooms, medical gas rooms, HPM rooms, and vaults; show LOW/HIGH pickup height and exhaust shaft routing to outdoors.

Check: Do
Ask early about hazmat/HPM use, MAQs, and NFPA 704 ratings, then design exhaust and scrubbers to that hazard profile.
Coordinate with architect and FP on room ratings, shaft locations, emergency shutoffs, and controls so the story matches across disciplines.
Review Risk: Don't
Recirculate air that can contain flammable, toxic, or radioactive contaminants back to occupied spaces.
Add fire dampers or route these ducts through fire walls; use rated shafts and continuous exhaust instead.

Product-conveying termination location must be documented in the permit set - not left to the contractor to resolve at installation. Confirm the termination is at least 10 ft from any property line, operable opening, or air intake, discharged to the exterior at a location where re-entry cannot occur, and that the direction of discharge is shown on the elevation.
Drawing / Submittal Check
For HazMat and HPM exhaust (502.8-502.10.3): the permit set must include a hazardous materials inventory, the NFPA 45 or H-occupancy classification, the required ventilation rate, the exhaust classification (corrosive, flammable, toxic), the material handling and containment strategy, and standby power provisions. HazMat exhaust sets submitted without the inventory or occupancy classification are routinely returned without review.
Common Review Risk
HazMat exhaust sets are frequently incomplete at first submittal because the design team does not have the final hazardous materials inventory when the permit is filed. A set filed with a placeholder HazMat note is better than one filed without any mention, but the review will not complete until the full inventory is received. Coordinate the HazMat inventory schedule with the permit timeline.
When To Escalate
Escalate when the hazardous materials inventory is not finalized before the permit is due, when the project uses a novel hazardous material that does not have a standard code classification, or when the fire marshal and the building official disagree on the applicable standard. A hazardous materials permit that is in dispute between reviewing agencies can stall a project for months.
Rated Assembly Coordination
Hazardous materials and HPM exhaust systems must be independent and may require rated enclosures around duct shafts. Confirm the shaft wall construction rating and whether a fire-rated enclosure is required for the full duct length.
Special Exhaust Coordination
For specialty exhaust, start with the contaminant and source. Then confirm capture method, duct material, routing, discharge, separation, controls, and whether another consultant or AHJ review is required.
