Daily Code Talk - IMC 501 (Exhaust Systems): Mini-Series Kickoff

On mechanical sheets, exhaust is one part of the ductwork story, and it is often where reviews stall. IMC 501 sets the rules for separation, routing.

On mechanical sheets, exhaust is one part of the ductwork story, and it is often where reviews stall. IMC 501 sets the rules for separation, routing, and termination that must be clearly shown alongside supply and return. If those items are not explicit on the drawings, redlines follow.

We'll cover 501 in four parts:

Part 1 (501.1-501.2): Scope and independence. What falls under Chapter 5 and which systems must be independent, including dryer, domestic kitchen, hazardous, Type I. How Type II and Sections 506 to 509 govern commercial kitchens.

Part 2 (501.3-501.3.1): Discharge and terminations. No indoor discharge, prevent re-entrainment, and meet clearances to openings, intakes, property lines, and grade, plus flood elevations.

Part 3 (501.3.2 + refs): Exterior opening protection. Screen and louver sizes from 1/4 to 1/2-inch, weather protection, AMCA 550 in hurricane regions. Key cross references include Section 504 for dryers, Sections 506 to 509 for kitchens, Section 511 for dust, Section 512 for sub slab, Section 513 for smoke, and Section 1105 for machinery and refrigerant.

Part 4 (501.4-501.5): Pressure and ducts. Plan makeup air when exhaust exceeds supply, maintain neutral or negative pressure where required, and specify duct construction per Chapter 6 when 501 defers.

Why it matters

Combined systems shown where independence is required (dryer/kitchen/hazardous/Type I).

Termination clearances missed (too close to OA intakes or operable openings, or too low above grade).

"Ductless range hood" notes used without separate Chapter 4 compliance shown.

No makeup air strategy, leaving spaces unintentionally negative.

Louver callouts missing size/AMCA 550 where applicable.

Part 1 drops tomorrow.

Code Path: IMC Section 501.1 (Scope) -> Section 501.2 (Independence) -> Section 501.3 (Discharge/Termination) -> Section 501.3.1 (Clearances) -> Section 501.3.2 (Exterior Protection) -> Section 501.4 (Makeup Air/Pressure) -> Section 501.5 (Ducts). Different system types require separate, independent systems.

Section 501.2: Dryer, Type I kitchen, hazardous, and smoke control exhaust must not be combined with environmental exhaust.

Section 501.3.1: Termination clearances to OA intakes, operable openings, and lot lines are minimum requirements - not targets.

Section 501.4: Makeup air must be provided when exhaust exceeds supply to prevent unintended negative pressurization.

Check: Before You Submit

Confirm all exhaust system types are identified on M-001 and classified by section (501, 502, 503, 505, 506, 510, 512).

Verify termination locations are shown on the roof plan or site plan with clearance dimensions to intakes and openings.

Confirm makeup air source and CFM balance are shown for any space where exhaust exceeds supply.

Review Risk:

Exhaust termination too close to an outdoor air intake or operable window - minimum clearances from 501.3.1 must be dimensioned.

Combined exhaust systems where independence is required (dryer + kitchen, hazardous + general) must be shown as separate systems.

Missing makeup air strategy for spaces with net exhaust - plan shows exhaust CFM without showing where replacement air comes from.

Chapter 5 enforcement starts by confirming which section governs each exhaust system type: ambient-air systems to Sections 501-503, dryer exhaust to 504, domestic range exhaust to 505, commercial kitchen exhaust to Sections 506-509, product-conveying to 510, dust collection to 511, smoke control to 512, laboratory exhaust to 513. Routing the wrong system to the wrong section generates first-cycle comments that delay the entire mechanical review.

Drawing / Submittal Check

For any exhaust system: M-001 must classify the exhaust type (general, kitchen, hazardous, dryer) and confirm which IMC Ch5 section governs each system. If the project has more than one exhaust type, each must be called out separately on M-001 with its governing section. Mixing exhaust types on a single note is the first

When To Escalate

Escalate when the exhaust discharge location is constrained by adjacent buildings, property lines, or existing intakes that cannot be relocated. Constrained discharge is a coordination problem between the mechanical engineer, the architect, and the AHJ that a standard design cannot resolve alone. Also escalate when the exhaust system crosses multiple jurisdictions or code editions.

Load Assumption Check

Chapter 501 exhaust requirements establish minimum exhaust rates that size the exhaust fan and the makeup air system. Set exhaust CFM requirements by occupancy and space type before running the makeup air heating and cooling load.

Kitchen Exhaust Coordination

For kitchen exhaust, tie the hood schedule, appliance lineup, grease duct route, cleanouts, fan discharge, fire suppression interface, and make-up air strategy into one reviewable story.
