/ Field knowledge · IMC 506.3.13
The grease outlet has to be dimensioned, not noted.
Mystery wall terminations, fans sitting on the roof without a 40-inch stack, and grease outlets next to OA intakes are the redlines Daily Code Talk #62 was written for.
Educational reading of 2024 IMC 506.3.13 (model code). Confirm the adopted FBC Mechanical edition and local amendments. This is not a termination design.
What 506.3.13 is asking the drawings to show
- Above-roof (506.3.13.1). Discharge opening at least 40 in above the roof surface. Note it. Do not make the reviewer scale a detail.
- Through-wall (506.3.13.2). Allowed only when the discharge is not a public nuisance or fire hazard; not where the IBC requires protected openings; at least 3 ft from an exterior-wall opening; still meets 506.3.13.3.
- Separation (506.3.13.3). Unless an exception applies: 10 ft horizontally from the same/contiguous building, adjacent buildings, and adjacent property lines; 10 ft above adjoining grade; 10 ft horizontally from or 3 ft above outdoor-air intakes.
- 5 ft exception. Horizontal separation can drop to 5 ft when the exhaust discharges away from those locations — and the drawings have to show that direction.
What plan review actually marks
Wall termination near windows. Outlet next to an OA intake. Roof fan too low. “Per code” with no dimensions. Show 40 IN MIN ABOVE ROOF, distance to intake, distance to property line / adjacent building, and discharge direction if you need the 5 ft exception.

What to send
Roof plan or elevations, existing termination photos on a remodel, OA intake locations, and property-line / adjacent-building context. A share link is enough.
If the outlet is the comment
Send the roof plan and the photos. Masterbuild will say whether this is a 40-inch stack, a wall-termination path, or a coordination problem with intakes.
