If the spray gun still runs when the fan is off, it is not 502.7.
The 2024 model IMC requires exhaust while flammable finishes are sprayed and long enough afterward to remove drying and residue vapors. Spray equipment must be interlocked so it cannot operate without ventilation. Spray exhaust goes outdoors through an independent duct for each booth or room unless a specific exception is established. Recirculation is prohibited by default; the narrow exception is makeup air for spray operations, with particulate removal, vapor controls and a defined monitor-shutdown response.

Operation and the outdoor path
- 502.7.3.1: Ventilation operates throughout spraying and sufficiently afterward to exhaust vapors from drying coated articles and finishing-material residue. Spraying cannot operate unless that ventilation operates.
- 502.7.3.5 baseline: Each spray booth and spray room has an independent exhaust duct discharging outdoors. An ordinary shop return or shared environmental riser is not that path.
- 502.7.3.6: Fan motors are outside booths and ducts. Rotating elements are nonferrous or nonsparking, or the casing is made of or lined with such material. A belt entering a duct or booth needs the specified tight enclosure.
Recirculation is a limited makeup-air exception
Under 502.7.3.2, spray exhaust may be recirculated as makeup air for spray operations, not as unrestricted supply to occupied rooms. For unmanned spraying, document every condition: solid particulate removal; vapor concentration strictly below 25% LFL; approved vapor-monitoring equipment; an alarm and automatic spray shutdown if the concentration exceeds 25% LFL; and, if the vapor monitor shuts down, automatic exhaust of 100% of the air volume specified in 509. For manned spraying, all of those conditions apply plus prepared documents showing no life-safety hazard to personnel in the booth, spraying space or room. A monitor and spray shutdown alone omit the monitor-failure exhaust transition.
When can booths share a duct?
502.7.3.5 has two scoped alternatives. The first is for multiple booths with combined frontal area no greater than 18 ft² using identical spray-finishing material; if multiple fans serve one booth, they must be interconnected to operate simultaneously. The second requires treatment for air-pollution control or energy conservation, compatible materials that will not react or ignite duct residue, no nitrocellulose-based finish, overspray filtering before the manifold, and automatic sprinklers at every booth/manifold junction in addition to the chapter's other protection. Neither alternative is a blanket shared-duct permission for spray rooms.
Other spray checks remain independent: the 502.7.3.3 exhaust stream must be diluted below 25% LFL; opening velocity depends on open-front, enclosed-conveyance, fixed/automated electrostatic or cross-draft-control conditions. Dipping, electrostatic and powder use 502.7.4-.6; floor resurfacing is 502.7.7. Enclosed organic coating is 502.12.
Check the failure sequence, not just the normal airflow
On the controls diagram, show what happens above 25% LFL and separately what happens when the vapor monitor shuts down. On the duct plan, show which exact 502.7.3.5 path, if any, permits a manifold.

What to send
Booth or room and manned/unmanned status; process and SDS; interlock and after-spray sequence; outdoor duct route or the exact recirculation/manifold exception. For recirculation, include particulate removal, approved monitor, high-vapor alarm/shutdown and the automatic 100% IMC 509 exhaust transition on monitor shutdown. For a shared duct, include frontal areas, materials, fans, filters and junction sprinklers as applicable.
