Do not hang pipe from gypsum.
IMC 305: support all mechanical piping. Hangers go into structure — not gypsum. Spacing follows Table 305.4 by material, not a single “every 8 feet” note.
Educational 2024 IMC 305.1–305.5.1. Confirm adopted edition, Table 305.4, and MSS SP-58. This is not a hanger design.
- 305.2. Hangers handle static + specified dynamic loads. Contact materials must be compatible (no galvanic attack on copper).
- 305.3. Attach to building structure in an approved manner. Coordinate anchors with S-sheets.
- 305.4 examples (horizontal). Steel pipe 12 ft; steel tubing 8 ft; copper pipe 12 ft / copper tube 8 ft; PVC/ABS/CPVC 4 ft; PEX/PP/PE-RT ≤ 1 in: 32 in. Vertical typically 10–15 ft (see table). Cast iron horizontal can be 10 ft with 10-ft lengths. Mid-story guides on vertical runs where noted.
- 305.5 / 305.5.1. Non-ferrous/non-cast-iron piping < 1-1/4 in from the face of studs/joists/rafters: steel shield plates, 16-gage min (0.0575 in), covering the bored/notched area and extending ≥ 2 in above the sole plate and below the top plate.

That is a pre-occupancy field correction. Plastic within 1.25 in of framing without shields fails inspection and requires disassembly.

What to send
Pipe materials on the job, a typical hanger if it exists, and whether this is a tight-ceiling retrofit.
If the hanger note is the entire spec
Send the pipe materials and the ceiling photos. Masterbuild will say whether Table 305.4 and shield plates are even on the drawings.
