“Vent to exterior” is not a design.
IMC 801: “vent to exterior” is not a design. Trace fuel, method, material, pressure, size, and termination from the appliance to outdoors. An existing chimney to remain is not itself a design.
Educational 2024 IMC 801. Confirm adopted edition, IFGC vs IMC, and NFPA 31 for oil. This is not a vent sizing.
- Identify appliance, fuel, venting method, and governing standard. Gas-fired appliance venting is addressed by the IFGC; oil-fired also needs NFPA 31 coordination.
- The chimney or vent must provide adequate flow outdoors — Chapter 8 or an approved engineered design. Forced draft, induced draft, and power exhausters can create positive pressure; materials and joints must be listed for that pressure.
- Reuse four-gate test: size and draft, flue passageway condition, cleanout access, clearances and fireblocking. Abandoned inlets closed. Solid-fuel appliances cannot share a chimney passageway with another appliance. Multistory common venting is generally prohibited.
- Plastic vent joints follow the appliance manufacturer. Oil-fired: manual-reset blocked vent switch that stops the burner when the vent is obstructed.

Send the appliance listing. Masterbuild will say whether 801 even has a path — or the existing chimney failed the four-gate reuse test.
