Start with the appliance: identify the appliance, fuel type, venting method, and governing standard - gas-fired appliance venting is addressed by the IFGC, and oil-fired appliances also require NFPA 31 coordination. Verify venting performance: the chimney or vent must provide adequate flow to carry combustion products outdoors, complying with Chapter 8 or an approved engineered design. Size the system correctly: vent and chimney sizing must match the appliance and operating condition, and existing systems may require resizing to maintain draft and control condensation.

Understand pressure conditions: forced draft, induced draft, and power exhausters can create positive pressure, and vent materials, joints, and fittings must be listed for the actual pressure condition. Coordinate chimneys and liners: masonry chimneys must be properly located, constructed, sized, and lined for the appliance served, and the space around a liner is not an approved second vent.

Review existing systems before reuse: size and draft, flue passageway condition, cleaning and cleanout access, liner condition, clearances and fireblocking, abandoned inlet closures, and appliance compatibility all have to be confirmed - an existing chimney to remain is not itself a design. Maintain appliance separation: solid-fuel appliances cannot share a chimney passageway with another appliance, and multistory common venting is generally prohibited unless the limited exterior-access enclosure exception is met.

Include final safeguards: plastic vent joints must follow the appliance manufacturer's instructions, and oil-fired appliances require a manual-reset blocked vent switch that stops burner operation when the vent is obstructed.

When To Escalate

Escalate any existing chimney or vent reuse without a documented four-gate acceptance (size, passageway, cleanout, clearance), any common-vent configuration serving more than one floor, any reduced clearance without a specific UL 1777 liner listing, and any oil-fired appliance without a confirmed blocked vent switch and manual reset.

Field Tip

Start at the appliance schedule and trace the venting system to the outdoors. If the fuel type, venting method, material, size, pressure condition, and termination are unclear at any point along that trace, the design is not permit-ready.
