Chapter 8 opens with venting - and venting is one of the most consistently underdetailed scopes on mechanical permit sets. "Vent to exterior" is not a design; it is a placeholder that a reviewer will reject. We're breaking IMC 801 into 21 focused posts so every appliance-to-termination decision gets the attention a combustion-product path actually requires.

Plain-English Highlights

IMC 801 governs venting for fuel-fired appliances other than gas-fired appliances - gas-fired venting runs through the International Fuel Gas Code (IFGC) instead. Before any vent detail gets reviewed, the permit set has to answer: what appliance, what fuel, what venting method, and what governs it. Chimneys (masonry and factory-built) and vents (Type L, pellet, and similar) are not interchangeable, and oil-fired appliances pull in NFPA 31 alongside Chapter 8.

Why It Matters

A venting design is only reviewable if the AHJ can trace combustion products from the appliance outlet to a safe termination, with every material, size, slope, clearance, and support decision visible on the drawings. Gaps in that chain - missing liner compatibility, an unaddressed abandoned opening, an undersized flue - don't just generate RFIs. They create backdrafting, carbon monoxide, corrosion, and creosote risk that doesn't show up until the system is operating.

Where To Show It

M-001: chimney/vent code basis and appliance venting criteria. M-101: equipment layout and full vent/chimney routing. M-501: chimney, vent, connector, liner, and termination details. M-601: appliance, boiler, furnace, water heater, and generator schedules with venting basis. A/LS sheets: rated walls, shafts, roof penetrations. P sheets: fuel, oil, and water heater/boiler coordination. E sheets: exhausters, interlocks, and draft fan controls.

**Do** - Identify every fuel-burning appliance and its venting method before detailing. - State the governing standard - IMC 801, NFPA 31, or IFGC - on the drawings. - Show the complete vent path, appliance outlet to termination. - Coordinate liners, cleanouts, clearances, and any abandoned-opening closures.

**Do Not** - Use "vent to exterior" as the design. - Reuse a chimney without documenting condition, liner, size, and clearance. - Apply IMC 801 to gas-fired appliance venting without checking the IFGC.

Run the 801 review from the appliance schedule outward, not from the vent symbol inward. Confirm fuel type and venting method first - that single decision determines which code path, which liner compatibility rules, and which sizing method apply to everything downstream.

Drawing / Submittal Check

For each fuel-fired appliance on the schedule, trace fuel type, listing, venting method, governing standard, chimney/vent/connector type, size, and termination location back to the plan and detail sheets. A schedule entry with no matching vent detail is an incomplete submittal, not a field decision.

Common Review Risk

The recurring miss is treating venting as a single mechanical note instead of a coordinated system: masonry chimney construction shown only on the mechanical sheet with no architectural/structural tie-in, or an existing chimney marked "to remain" with no condition, liner, or sizing basis.

When To Escalate

Escalate oil-fired appliances needing NFPA 31 coordination, masonry chimney reuse without a documented condition assessment, any positive-pressure venting system, and multistory or common-vent conditions where one design decision affects multiple units.

Field Tip

Start at the appliance flue collar, not the roof penetration. If you can't trace material, size, liner, clearance, support, and termination from that collar to daylight using only the permit drawings, the venting design isn't ready for review.
