IMC 801.4 and 801.5 shift the venting conversation from 'does it reach outside' to 'does it actually move combustion products outside, reliably, under the conditions the appliance creates.' A vent that terminates outdoors but doesn't draft properly is not a compliant vent.

**Do** - Show a continuous vent path from appliance to termination, with no unaddressed gaps. - Identify the draft or pressure condition driving the design. - Coordinate vent sizing with the actual appliance requirement, not a rule of thumb. - Use an engineered design, with calculations, when the system doesn't fit the prescriptive path.

**Do Not** - Treat "positive flow" as a note instead of a design requirement. - Assume any exterior termination means the system will draft correctly. - Ignore offsets, horizontal runs, height, pressure, or flue-gas temperature in the sizing. - Submit an engineered venting system with no calculations or manufacturer data behind it.

Ask one question of every vent detail: what creates the draft or flow? If the answer isn't clear from the appliance type, vent layout, chimney height, exhauster, or engineered design narrative, the system hasn't actually been designed - it's been drawn.

Drawing / Submittal Check

Trace the vent path on the drawings and confirm offsets, horizontal runs, and total equivalent length are accounted for in the sizing - not just the straight-line height to the termination.

Common Review Risk

Engineered venting submittals are frequently incomplete - missing the calculation basis, manufacturer performance data, or the assumptions behind the pressure and temperature inputs used.

When To Escalate

Escalate any vent system relying on an exhauster or mechanical draft to achieve positive flow, any layout with unusual offsets or long horizontal runs, and any engineered system submitted without supporting calculations.

Field Tip

Trace the vent path and ask: what creates the draft? If the answer isn't obvious from the appliance, the layout, the chimney height, or a powered exhauster, the system isn't ready for review.
