Reusing the chimney is not keeping the same size.
Reusing the same chimney does not mean keeping the same effective size. Removing, replacing, or adding an appliance — or changing fuel or efficiency — changes flue-gas temperature, mass flow, draft, and condensation. Bigger is not automatically safer. Smaller is not automatically acceptable.
Educational 2024 International Mechanical Code (IMC) 801.18.1 from Daily Code Talk. Confirm the adopted edition. Distinct from minimum area (801.6) and solid-fuel 3:1 cap (801.7). The code does not say every reuse requires resizing; it requires evidence that the retained or revised size performs. This is not a size calculator. Gas-fired systems follow the fuel-gas path, not IMC 801 alone.
- Resize as necessary to control flue-gas condensation and provide the required draft for the appliance or appliances served. Evaluate both — passing one is not enough.
- Oil-fired appliances vented to masonry chimneys: resizing complies with NFPA 31.
- Re-evaluate the remaining common vent when an appliance is removed. Do not leave the smaller load on the original flue without that evaluation. Do not leave final liner or vent size to the installer without a documented design basis.
On the set: two columns beside the appliance schedule — existing vent condition and required vent condition. Compare dimensions, effective height, connected input, venting characteristics, sizing basis, draft result, condensation result, and final action.

Flue gases cool, condensate forms, masonry and liner deteriorate, draft becomes unreliable. The opposite risk: added load or restrictive geometry leaves the system undersized. Escalate common vents after removal, fuel conversion, condensing replacements, exterior masonry, uncertain effective height, and oil-fired masonry without an NFPA 31 basis.
