“Vent to exterior” is not a venting design.
Combustion products need an approved path out of the building, sized and selected for this appliance — not assumed from whatever chimney is nearby. Oil-fired appliances also coordinate with NFPA 31. A Type I hood is not appliance venting under 801. “Vent to exterior” is not a complete design note.
Educational 2024 International Mechanical Code (IMC) 801.2 and 801.2.1 from Daily Code Talk. Confirm the adopted edition. Distinct from direct-vent / 804 and Type I hoods (507). This is not a chimney selection.
- Every fuel-burning appliance must discharge to a vent, factory-built chimney, or masonry chimney, unless it is vented under Section 804 (direct-vent, integral-vent, or mechanical draft).
- Commercial cooking appliances under a Type I hood are reviewed under IMC 507, not as appliance venting here. Do not substitute hood exhaust for 801 venting.
- 801.2.1: oil-fired appliances also coordinate with NFPA 31 — chimney sizing, draft, combustion temperature, liner compatibility, and blocked-vent protection. A generic “per code” note is not enough for oil.
On the set: a venting column on the appliance schedule — fuel type, venting method, vent material, and governing standard. If that column is blank, the design is not permit-ready. The appliance listing names the venting category; the listing controls, not the available chimney.
IMC 801 note, no NFPA 31, oil-fired boiler
Sizing and draft requirements differ enough between IMC Chapter 8 and NFPA 31 that omitting NFPA 31 is a technical gap, not paperwork. Escalate oil-fired appliances on existing chimneys without a documented condition and liner assessment.

What to send
Fuel type (oil / gas / solid), appliance cut sheet, and whether NFPA 31 is named on the set for oil. Photos of any existing chimney.
If the schedule says oil and the note only says “IMC 801”
Send the cut sheet. Masterbuild will say whether 801.2.1 still has no NFPA 31 path — or 801.18 still has no four-gate evidence on the chimney.
