A larger chimney is not automatically better.

For solid-fuel appliances, oversizing the flue is the failure mode — not undersizing it. A flue that is too large cools combustion products too fast. Cross-sectional area of the flue cannot be greater than three times the area of the appliance flue collar or outlet. Area, not matching diameters.

On the set: collar/outlet size and area, chimney/flue/liner size and area at the connection, and the ratio shown explicitly — especially for existing masonry reuse where the as-built size needs field verification. Coordinate liner material with solid-fuel combustion byproducts.

An oversized flue on a solid-fuel appliance is a creosote and draft problem waiting to happen, not a conservative safety margin. Escalate any solid-fuel connection to existing masonry without a documented flue area.

If a smaller stove is hitting a large old flue

Send the collar size and the chimney size. Masterbuild will say whether 801.7 is already over 3:1 — or 801.11 still has no dedicated path.
