A cooling tower is not a mechanical-only item.
A cooling tower, evaporative condenser, or fluid cooler is not a line on the mechanical schedule. Daily Code Talk’s Chapter 9 kickoff: it can affect structure, plumbing, and intake location. - Identify the exact equipment. A closed-circuit cooler is not an open tower. Listing and manufacturer installation instructions govern over a generic “cooling tower” note.
- Structure owns the basin and the steel. Put operating weight where the structural engineer can see it. Supports and seismic restraint follow the IBC (IMC 908.4); on South Florida roofs, wind usually governs.
- The drain and blowdown are plumbing. IMC 908.6: they discharge through an indirect connection to an approved location, and chemical waste needs the regulator’s approval. If they have nowhere legal to go, that is not an MEP surprise at inspection. Points of connection stay with the purveyor.
- A tower can fit structurally and still dump into an outdoor-air intake. IMC 908.3: plume discharge at least 5 ft above or 20 ft away from any ventilation inlet. Overlay the roof with intakes, openings, and the roof edge.
- Chapter 9 is often only one stop. The permit set has to show the full path, not just the section number: listing (908.1), access (908.2), plume (908.3), supports (908.4), water and drainage (908.5–908.6), refrigerant or hazardous fluid (908.7).
- Automated bleed control and drift eliminators rated at no more than 0.005 percent of circulated flow (908.8) belong on the schedule and in the sequence of operation, not in a field note.

If the tower is already on the roof plan as a tag and nothing else
Send the cut sheet. MasterBuild will say whether mechanical still has no row — not whether structure will accept the basin.
