A battery room is not a storage closet.
A battery charging area is not a storage closet with a transfer grille. IMC 502.3: exhaust powered industrial-truck and equipment charging areas to prevent flammable-gas buildup. 502.4–502.5: vent stationary battery rooms and cabinets per IMC 502 and the fire code so off-gassing stays controlled. The drawing set should not leave the safety logic implied — battery type, hazard basis, ventilation calculation, control sequence, alarm interface, exhaust path, and AHJ / fire-protection coordination, all traceable.
Educational 2024 International Mechanical Code (IMC) 502.3–502.5 from Daily Code Talk. Confirm the adopted edition. Distinct from 304.5 hydrogen and 404 garage. This is not a battery-room design. Special-process exhaust (502.2–502.7) is designed to the process, not the room name — “EXHAUST AS REQUIRED” with no basis is a redline.
- 502.3 battery charging: exhaust powered industrial-truck / equipment charging areas so flammable gas cannot build up.
- 502.4–502.5 stationary batteries: vent rooms and cabinets per IMC 502 and the fire code. Off-gassing stays controlled — not a note that “the manufacturer will handle it.”
- Related 502.2–502.7 (same DCT post, process-based): aircraft fueling — floor-level or in-slab vents so heavy vapors cannot pool. Dry cleaning Type II: 1 cfm/ft² in dry-clean and drying rooms. Flammable finishes: exhaust during and after spraying; interlock so spray equipment cannot run without exhaust; recirculation only if vapors stay below 25% of the lower flammable limit (LFL) with monitoring and auto shutdown. Each spray booth/room its own exhaust to outdoors unless documented manifold rules are met. Non-sparking fan wheels; motors out of the airstream.
On the set: M-001 “SPECIAL PROCESS EXHAUST — IMC 502” with design basis. M-101: tag the room, inlet height (low for heavy vapors), independent ducts to outdoors where required. M-601: exhaust type, design basis, code reference. Makeup air sized to replace that exhaust. Do not lump these into generic “exhausted rooms.”
A lithium or lead-acid room with a toilet-exhaust grille
Or charging forklifts in a garage with no 502.3 path. Or spray exhaust recirculated with no LFL monitoring. Process first — then the fan.

The battery type (or charging equipment), the room or cabinet, whether exhaust is dedicated to outdoors, and any fire-code / manufacturer ventilation claim.
If the battery room only has a transfer grille
Send the room and the battery type. Masterbuild will say whether 502.4 still has no dedicated exhaust path — or 502.3 still has charging with no flammable-gas control.
