Hydrogen does not wait at the floor like gasoline vapor.
Hydrogen is lighter than air. It accumulates at the ceiling. IMC 304.5: hydrogen spaces in public, private, repair, and parking garages and fuel-dispensing facilities get ventilation by 304.5.1 (natural), 304.5.2 (mechanical per 502.16), or 304.5.3 (approved engineered). Rooms that communicate directly with a private garage are treated as the garage. Miss the opening heights or ignition-source elevation and expect holds, redesign, and re-inspection. Fire-marshal pre-review is typical — do not send this to the building department first.
Educational 2024 International Mechanical Code (IMC) 304.5 from Daily Code Talk ([FG] fuel-gas). Confirm the adopted edition. Distinct from 404 garage ventilation. This is not a hydrogen-system design.
- 304.5.1 natural: room ≤ 850 sf. Two permanent openings in the same exterior wall — upper within 12 in of the ceiling, lower within 12 in of the floor. Total free area ≥ 0.5 sf per 1,000 cubic feet of room volume. Minimum opening dimension 3 in. Ducts, if used, same area as the openings. Ignition sources ≥ 12 in below the ceiling. Hydrogen output ≤ 4 scfm per 250 sf of floor area.
- 304.5.1.2 louvers: net free area. If unknown: wood = 25%, metal = 75%. Louvers fixed open.
- 304.5.2 mechanical: ventilate per IMC 502.16. Place ignition sources below the exhaust-outlet elevation.
- 304.5.3: an approved engineered system may replace 304.5.1 / 304.5.2.
On the set: M-001 picks the path (natural / mechanical / engineered). M-101: hydrogen-room envelope, opening heights or exhaust-outlet heights, garage communication. M-601: vent path, room area and volume, free area or exhaust cfm, ignition-source elevation, detection/alarm sensor type and location. Electrical classification zone on both electrical and mechanical drawings.

Hydrogen stratifies. A single opening at mid-wall does not 304.5.1. Electrical classification not shown is a common hydrogen permit comment. Missing detection/alarm documentation is a routine fire-marshal flag.

If hydrogen is in the garage with one mid-wall louver
Send the envelope. Masterbuild will say whether 304.5.1 still has no upper-and-lower pair — or 304.5.2 still has ignition above the exhaust outlet.
