Finding the section is not the whole job.

NEC 90.3–90.6: finding a section is only part of the job. Ask three questions: is it mandatory? Does a later chapter modify it? Is there a written AHJ approval? “AHJ approved” on a drawing without the paper behind it is not an approval.

Educational 2026 NEC 90.3, 90.4, 90.5, and 90.6. Confirm the adopted edition. Pairs with 90.1 covered and 90.2(B)–(D).

Citing the note as the Code

Most disputed comments: informational text treated as mandatory, or a Chapter 1–4 rule applied without checking Chapters 5–8 for the actual system. Do not enforce informational notes. Do not write “AHJ approved” without the supporting document tied to the specific provision.

What to send

The comment, the section you cited, and any written AHJ interpretation.

If the comment cites a note as a requirement

Send the comment. Masterbuild will say whether 90.5 even makes that language mandatory — or a later chapter already modified the general rule.
