NEC 90.2(B)–(D): code-compliant is not the same as designed. The NEC is practical safeguarding, not a design specification and not an instruction manual for untrained persons.
Educational 2026 NEC 90.2(B), 90.2(C), and 90.2(D). Confirm the adopted edition. This is not a spare-capacity calculation and not permission to oversize without an engineering basis.
- 90.2(B) Practical safeguarding: practical protection of people and property from electrical hazards. The NEC is not intended to be a design specification or an instruction manual for untrained persons.
- 90.2(C) Adequacy: compliance plus proper maintenance should result in an installation essentially free from electrical hazards. That does not automatically mean efficient, convenient, adequate for good service, or sized for future expansion.
- 90.2(D) Relation to other international standards recognizes IEC 60364-1 as addressing similar fundamental electrical-safety principles. It does not authorize IEC installation practice on an NEC-governed project.
A mechanical equipment schedule may satisfy today’s connected load. Future tenant equipment, added HVAC, controls, heat tracing, pumps, or EV charging can change demand. NEC minimum is not a complete engineering strategy. Separate code requirements from engineering recommendations in the documentation. Do not use future capacity as a substitute for required calculations.
Zero spare spaces, phased buildout
A panel schedule with no spare spaces on a project the owner already described as phased is compliant today and a full panel replacement tomorrow. Ask two questions separately: does it comply today? What happens when the building changes?
