A recirculating dust collector with no 99.9% note is not 510.1.3.
Dust, stock, and refuse conveying exhaust discharges outdoors — directly by flue, or indirectly through the bin or vault the system discharges into — unless contaminants are removed. Recirculation is allowed only if all three are met: particulate removal of at least 99.9% at 10 microns; vapor concentrations below 25% of the lower flammable limit (LFL); and approved equipment that continuously monitors vapor concentration. Miss any one → exhaust to outdoors. A “recirculating dust collector” with no performance basis is the redline.
Educational 2024 International Mechanical Code (IMC) 510.1.3 from Daily Code Talk. Confirm the adopted edition. Distinct from 510 collectors, 510.1.5 explosion, and 510.2 over 600°F. This is not a dust-system design. 510.1.2: cyclone delivery pipe shall not discharge refuse into a boiler, furnace, Dutch oven, refuse burner, or incinerator firebox. 510.1.4: open-air terminals get an approved noncombustible spark screen.
- Default: discharge to the exterior. Direct flue, or through the bin/vault, unless contaminants are removed.
- Recirculation — all three: 99.9% at 10 µm; vapors < 25% LFL; continuous approved vapor monitoring. If any one is missing, it is not 510.1.3 recirculation.
- Do not treat dust-conveying exhaust as general return air. Do not label a unit “recirculating” without stating 99.9% @ 10 µm and < 25% LFL and the monitor.
- 510.1.2: no cyclone discharge to a firebox. Treat discharge piping as industrial duct — support, clearance, Chapter 6.
- 510.1.4: approved noncombustible spark screen at every open-air terminal.
On the set: M-001 “DISCHARGE TO OUTDOORS” or “RECIRCULATION PER 510.1.3” with the three criteria. Schedule: filtration efficiency, monitor type/location, alarm/shutdown. Roof: spark screen tagged. If recirculation is the claim, the three-part check belongs on the same sheet as the collector.

Field will assume the easiest path. Default outdoors unless all three are documented. Explosion control is a different 510.1.5 question.

Whether the collector returns air to the plant or goes outdoors, any filter-efficiency claim, and whether a vapor monitor is specified.

Send the collector cut and the discharge path. Masterbuild will say whether 510.1.3 still has no three-part recirc — or 510.1.2 still has cyclone discharge into a firebox.
