Default rule: discharge to outdoors
Dust/stock/refuse conveying exhaust must discharge to the exterior, either:
1. Directly by flue, or
2. Indirectly through the bin/vault the system discharges into, unless contaminants are removed.
Recirculation is allowed only with strict conditions
You can recirculate exhaust air only if ALL of the following are met:
1. Particulate removal: minimum 99.9% at 10 microns.
2. Vapor safety: vapor concentrations are < 25% of the LFL.
3. Monitoring: approved equipment continuously monitors vapor concentration.
On Plans: Why it matters
Common failure: "recirculating dust collector" shown with no performance basis, no LFL monitoring callout, or no clear statement of where the air actually discharges.
Code Path: Where to show it
M-001: indicate DISCHARGE TO OUTDOORS or RECIRCULATION PER 510.1.3 with the three criteria.
Schedules: call out filtration efficiency (99.9% @ 10µm), monitoring device type/location, and alarm/shutdown sequence (if specified by the manufacturer/AHJ).
Plans: show discharge path (flue vs bin/vault) and equipment locations.
Check: Do
Default to 100% exhaust to outdoors unless you can document all 3 recirc criteria.
Call out 99.9% @ 10µm on the equipment schedule and submittal basis.
Show the vapor monitor (location + alarm/shutdown sequence if required by mfr/AHJ).
Make discharge intent obvious: "DIRECT OUTDOOR DISCHARGE" or "RECIRC AIR."
Review Risk: Don't
Don't label a unit "recirculating" without stating 99.9% @ 10µm and <25% LFL.
Don't omit the approved vapor concentration monitoring callout.
Don't leave discharge routing ambiguous (field will assume the easiest path).
Don't treat dust conveying exhaust like "general return air."

If any one is missing -> EXHAUST TO OUTDOORS.

High-temperature exhaust systems under Section 510 must have the clearances and enclosure requirements shown at every penetration and in every space the duct passes through. Confirm the clearance-to-combustibles dimension is on the duct section detail and that any required enclosure or listed duct wrap is specified on M-001 with the UL design number.
Drawing / Submittal Check
For 510.1.3 (exhaust discharge and recirculation): the drawings must show whether the collected air is discharged to the exterior or recirculated to the space. For recirculated air, confirm the filter efficiency and the AHJ acceptance of recirculation for the material type. Show the recirculation bypass to the exterior for maintenance or filter changeout periods.
Common Review Risk
Recirculated air from dust-collecting systems is the most scrutinized aspect of the permit review in many jurisdictions. Environmental agencies may require permits for air recirculation involving certain dust types. Confirm whether the AHJ and environmental agency permit the recirculation of the specific dust before the system is designed for recirculation. A system designed for recirculation that is required to exhaust to the exterior is a significant redesign.
When To Escalate
Escalate when the local environmental agency requires an air quality permit for the recirculated or discharged air from the dust collection system. Air quality permits for industrial processes take months to obtain and must be factored into the project schedule. Confirm the environmental permit requirement at project initiation.
Special Exhaust Coordination
For specialty exhaust, start with the contaminant and source. Then confirm capture method, duct material, routing, discharge, separation, controls, and whether another consultant or AHJ review is required.
Duct System Coordination
Section 510.1.3 governs exhaust discharge location relative to property lines and adjacent openings. The site plan and roof plan must show dimensioned clearances from the exhaust outlet to all affected openings.
