Minimum ΔP that makes the stair door unopenable is a failed system.
IMC 512 gives three smoke-control approaches: pressurize a barrier, push air across an opening, or exhaust a smoke layer. The method must hit its target without making doors impossible to open. Fully sprinklered pressurization: ΔP ≥ 0.05 in. water gauge. Airflow toward the fire: ≤ 200 fpm — over that, the airflow method is not allowed. Exhaust (atriums/malls): keep the smoke layer at least 6 ft above any walking surface that is part of egress in the smoke zone. Duration: at least 20 minutes after detection, or 1.5 × calculated egress time, whichever is greater.

- 512.6 pressurization: pressure difference across smoke barriers protects adjacent zones/egress. A tenable environment is not required in the fire-origin zone. Fully sprinklered: ΔP ≥ 0.05 in. w.g. Not fully sprinklered: ΔP ≥ 2× the maximum calculated design-fire ΔP. Maximum ΔP is limited by IBC door-opening forces — meeting minimum ΔP while failing the door is a failed system.
- 512.6.3: pressurized stairs and elevator hoistways follow IMC 512 plus the applicable IBC/IFC smoke-control provisions.
- 512.7 airflow (openings fixed open, AHJ approval): design per NFPA 92. Airflow toward the fire ≤ 200 fpm. If calculations exceed 200 fpm, airflow method is not allowed.
- 512.8 exhaust (building-official approval, large-volume): NFPA 92. Keep the smoke layer ≥ 6 ft above any walking surface that is part of egress in the smoke zone.
- 512.4.6 duration: active/engineered smoke control runs after detection for ≥ 20 minutes or 1.5 × calculated egress time, whichever is greater. Stack, wind, fire buoyancy, HVAC modes, and snow/ice at inlets belong in the analysis (512.4.1–512.4.5) — most failures are unmodeled forces, not “bad fans.”
On the set: method by zone and the target (ΔP in in. w.g., velocity in fpm, or layer height in ft). Exhaust method: smoke-filling calculation, design fire, exhaust rate, makeup air. Controls: smoke-mode fan/damper commands per zone. Systems must not fight each other (512.4.7).

Or 250 fpm “airflow method” toward the fire. Or a 10-minute fan runtime note. Door force, 200 fpm, 6 ft, and 20 min / 1.5× are the educational checks — not a typical HVAC sequence.

Send the method and the door schedule. Masterbuild will say whether 512.6 still has no door-force limit — or 512.7 still has airflow over 200 fpm toward the fire.
