IMC 201: if the team and the AHJ read “plenum” differently, you get redlines. Put the definition hierarchy on M-001 before anyone argues the word.

- 201.1 Scope: Chapter 2 definitions govern unless another section overrides.
- 201.2 Interchangeability: present covers future; singular ↔ plural; gendered terms are inclusive.
- 201.3 Terms defined in other codes: if not in the IMC, use IBC / IFC / IFGC / IPC.
- 201.4 Terms not defined: use the ordinarily accepted meaning in context.

Definitions per IMC Chapter 2; if undefined, see IBC/IFC/IFGC/IPC; if still undefined, use commonly accepted meaning per IMC 201.4.
Verify fuel-gas scope is routed to the IFGC, not the IMC, when applicable. Confirm the code edition on M-001 matches the jurisdiction’s adopted edition, including local amendments. Informal terms — ceiling cavity, recirc hood, exhaust fan — force the reviewer to interpret scope.
Scope dispute
When the AHJ believes a system is IMC and the design team believes another code covers it, get the code official’s determination in writing. A written scope determination protects the team from after-the-fact scope additions.
