What Section 910 covers
Listing and the manufacturer’s installation requirements.
Testing of oil-fired furnaces.
Prohibited locations.
Wall and corner clearances.
Separation from draperies and similar combustibles.
Thermostat location.
Bracing of the floor framing around the opening.
Clearance above grade.
Service clearances around the furnace.
Why it matters
The furnace physically interrupts the floor assembly. That creates direct coordination with circulation and egress, finishes and furnishings, structural framing, thermostat placement, below-floor conditions and future service access. A location that works mechanically can still fail on the floor construction, the egress path, combustible exposure or the lack of access below.
Review mindset before locating one
Confirm the exact listed appliance.
Read the manufacturer’s instructions.
Check the room use and circulation.
Coordinate the required clearances.
Verify the thermostat location.
Coordinate the framed opening with structural.
Confirm the below-floor installation conditions.
Field tip
Start a floor-furnace review in section, not in plan. The floor framing, furnace body, grade below and service clearances have to work together, and only a section shows all four. Next: Daily Code Talk #178, IMC 910.1–910.3 Floor Furnaces (1/2).
Code basis
2024 IMC 910 model-code education from the owner-provided Daily Code Talk. The dimensions are covered in the next two posts. Confirm the adopted edition, the listing and the manufacturer’s instructions.
