910.1 Listing and instructions
Install the selected floor furnace in accordance with its listing and manufacturer instructions. For an oil-fired floor furnace, verify testing to UL 729. Put the model in the equipment schedule so the proposed opening and installation can be checked against actual product data.
910.2 Placement
Do not place a floor furnace in the aisles or passageways of auditoriums, public halls, places of assembly, or an egress element serving those spaces. Except for wall-register models, keep the unit at least 6 inches from the nearest wall. A wall-register model stays at least 6 inches from a corner; draperies or similar combustibles stay at least 12 inches from any portion of the register. Show these dimensions on the architectural plan.
A floor furnace is not permitted in concrete floor construction built on grade. Locate its controlling thermostat in the same room or space, or in an adjacent room or space permanently open to it.
910.3 Framing
The floor around the furnace opening needs bracing and a supporting framework designed under the International Building Code. Coordinate the framed opening before the mechanical location is fixed.
What changes in the field
A unit can fit in plan and still conflict with the egress route, furnishings, thermostat sensing or structural framing. Review the mechanical plan, architectural circulation and structural framing together before permit.
Field check
Compare the proposed opening with prohibited egress locations and slab-on-grade construction.
Dimension wall, corner and combustible furnishing separation.
Show the thermostat's relationship to the served room and the structural opening.
