Daily Code Talk: IMC 805 - Factory-Built Chimneys Series Kickoff

Review a factory-built chimney as a complete listed assembly. This five-part series links appliance compatibility, routing, structural support, temperature classification, decorative shrouds, and insulation protection.

A chimney can fit the architectural chase and still be the wrong system for the appliance. It can also be correctly selected and then lose its required clearance during framing or insulation. The practical job is to keep the selected assembly consistent from equipment schedule through installed roof termination.

What This Series Helps You Decide

IMC 805 addresses factory-built chimneys. Its listing, appliance, geometry, support, heat-classification and protection controls belong together. For an architect, contractor, or mechanical designer, the useful result is a coordinated route and evidence package that can be compared with the installed work. A note saying only 'listed chimney' does not establish fuel compatibility, permitted accessories, or the required installation configuration.

The Five-Part Review

Part 1, Sections 805.1-805.3: establish listing, labeling and manufacturer instructions; distinguish the solid-fuel Type HT path and its stated exception from the UL 127 factory-built fireplace path. Part 2, Sections 805.4-805.5: resolve offset geometry, total elbow count and the structural members carrying the load. Part 3, Section 805.6: identify the medium-heat application and temperature at the chimney entrance before selecting the UL 959 path. Part 4, Section 805.7: verify that a decorative shroud is listed and labeled for the specific chimney system.

Part 5, Section 805.8: protect the required separation through insulated assemblies using the applicable shield installation path.

Start with One System Record

Record appliance manufacturer/model, fuel, operating duty, chimney manufacturer/model, applicable listing, instructions revision, diameter, route, and termination. Tie each selected support, elbow, adapter, shield, firestop and cap to the approved system documentation. Similar diameter, finish, or connection appearance does not establish interchangeability. A proposed substitution should identify every affected component and installation condition before acceptance.

Coordinate Space Before Procurement

Use the actual outside dimensions plus required clearances to reserve space. Check framing, shaft boundaries, roof geometry, insulation depth, support reactions, access for inspection and cleaning, and the installation sequence. Mark proposed support points and penetrations on sections, not only on plan. When a conflict forces a route change, recheck geometry, supports, clearance and the manufacturer's permitted arrangement together.

Field Value and Owner Handoff

Before concealment, compare labels and installed components against the selected system record. Photograph accessible supports and clearances without disturbing the assembly. Recheck the insulation interface after insulation installation. At closeout, retain the instructions, component identification, applicable inspection/startup evidence and maintenance information so later roofing, insulation or appliance replacement work can recognize the original system limitations.
