A higher-temperature appliance can require a different chimney system even when its outlet diameter matches an ordinary heating appliance. Selecting from connection size or input rating alone can leave the temperature classification unresolved until equipment has already been ordered.
The Specific Control
IMC 805.6 requires UL 959 compliance for factory-built chimneys serving medium-heat appliances that produce flue gas above 1,000°F, measured at the chimney entrance. The wording is above 1,000°F, not a generic '1,000°F and greater' rule. It also names a measurement location. A combustion-chamber temperature, an external jacket reading, or an exhaust value at a different point is not automatically the required entrance condition.
Preserve the Application Boundary
The provision concerns medium-heat appliances. Do not turn it into a universal chimney-selection rule for every process or high-heat system. A value at or below the threshold does not independently approve another chimney classification; appliance type, fuel, duty, listing, and other applicable requirements still need review. A temperature test rating or short-duration listing exposure is not automatically the product's permitted continuous operating condition.
Build a Useful Selection Record
Obtain the appliance manufacturer's operating data and identify the maximum relevant flue-gas condition, its location, and the operating modes covered. Record whether the stated temperature is measured, calculated, rated, or limited by controls. If only a nominal outlet value is available, request the missing basis instead of assuming cooling along an unspecified connector. Match that information with the chimney's listing, operating limits, permitted components and instructions.
Drawing and Coordination Implications
Place the appliance classification, temperature basis and required chimney standard in the design criteria and schedule. Reference the same system in routing, penetration, support and termination details. A change in chimney construction can change outside diameter, required clearance, weight, support arrangement and space within a shaft. Resolve those interfaces with architecture and structure before procurement. Show any manufacturer-required thermal-movement provisions without inventing a generic expansion-joint interval.
Field Observations and Test Planning
Verify accessible labels, model numbers and installed component identity against the selected assembly. Record visible deterioration, displaced joints or missing supports as observations requiring evaluation; appearance alone does not establish the operating temperature or cause of damage. Where project commissioning calls for measurements, qualified personnel should use an approved procedure, appropriate instruments and the required measurement location. Do not drill a listed chimney or insert a probe without an approved access method.

If the answer relies on 'typical temperature,' resolve the source before construction.
