Checking a chimney's diameter before checking its classification can send a coordinated project down the wrong path. A connection may fit physically while the appliance, fuel or fireplace requires a different listed system. Resolve identity and compatibility before investing in a route or accepting a substitution.
Listing Comes First
IMC 805.1 requires factory-built chimneys to be listed and labeled and installed and terminated under their manufacturer's instructions. Identify the actual product and its intended application. The broad listing requirement does not make every UL-listed metal chimney suitable for every appliance. Record manufacturer, model, listing classification, instruction revision and the compatible components specified for the installation.
Solid-Fuel Appliances in Dwelling Units
Section 805.2 uses the UL 103 Type HT path for factory-built chimneys installed in dwelling units with solid-fuel-burning appliances. Required identification includes Type HT and the Residential Type and Building Heating Appliance Chimney marking. A generic UL 103 reference alone does not establish the Type HT classification. The listed test classification is not a field instruction to operate a chimney at a test temperature.
Keep the Exception Within Its Scope
The stated exception concerns chimneys used with open-combustion-chamber fireplaces: UL 103 still applies, with the Residential Type and Building Heating Appliance Chimney marking, but the Type HT requirement described above is not imposed by that exception. For open-combustion-chamber appliances outside dwelling units, the section identifies the Building Heating Appliance Chimney or Residential Type and Building Heating Appliance Chimney marking. Do not extend an exception based only on a photograph or the word 'fireplace'; confirm the actual appliance classification.
Factory-Built Fireplaces Have Their Own Check
Section 805.3 requires chimneys used with factory-built fireplaces to comply with UL 127. Coordinate the fireplace and chimney as the compatible listed system identified by the manufacturer. Do not use the 805.2 exception to bypass this distinct requirement. The submittal should connect the fireplace model to the specified chimney and permitted termination and accessories.
Drawing, Submittal and Field Evidence
Tie the appliance schedule to the chimney schedule and section detail. Request the relevant listing/label information, full installation instructions and component list, including adapters, supports, firestops, insulation shields and termination. Before concealment, compare installed labels and joints with those records. Similar connection geometry does not authorize mixed components. A missing or unreadable label is an evidence gap requiring identification and evaluation, not proof of either compliance or failure.
Practical Review Sequence
Identify appliance and fuel; establish the applicable listing path; verify compatible chimney/components; then check routing, support, clearance and termination. This sequence can catch a wrong-system purchase before installed work must be removed. A field observation can establish visible identity and configuration, but it cannot verify concealed components or every listing condition without supporting records.
