A decorative box drawn on an elevation can become a venting-system change once it surrounds the chimney termination. This is a high-value coordination check before approving an exterior feature: verify the exact chimney and shroud combination while dimensions and fabrication can still be changed easily.
The Specific-System Rule
IMC 805.7 prohibits decorative shrouds at factory-built chimney terminations unless the shroud is listed and labeled for use with that specific chimney system and installed under Section 304.1. The chimney manufacturer and shroud manufacturer documentation must support the proposed combination. A listing for another model or another system does not establish compatibility.
Approval Needs More Than Appearance
An architectural approval, generic UL logo, supplier assurance, or letter that omits the relevant listing basis does not by itself demonstrate the code's specific-system condition. Request the shroud model or approved configuration, the compatible chimney system, listing/label evidence, required dimensions, permitted openings and installation instructions. If the proposal is custom fabricated, determine whether the actual geometry and material arrangement are covered by the documented listed option before fabrication.
Why the Geometry Matters
A cover can alter the available discharge area, wind interaction, heat dissipation and space around the termination. It can also affect maintenance access. Those are reasons to verify the approved assembly, not a basis for inventing a universal shroud-height or opening-area rule. A large visible opening does not prove that the proposed assembly is the one evaluated for the chimney.
Coordinate One Detail Across Disciplines
The architectural elevation, roof plan, mechanical termination detail, shroud shop drawing and chimney submittal should identify the same configuration. Show the listed cap and required surrounding space, attachment arrangement, roof/chase interface and service access. Coordinate architectural finishes and roof waterproofing without changing the approved termination geometry. Identify who must review dimensional revisions before a fabricator releases material.
What a Field Visit Can Establish
Compare accessible shroud and chimney identification with the approved records; document visible openings, cap arrangement, damage, attachments and deviations. A rooftop photograph does not establish concealed dimensions or listing compatibility. If identity or geometry cannot be verified, record the missing evidence and obtain manufacturer/system documentation. Do not authorize an improvised cover, remove components from an operating system, or change openings based on visual judgment alone.
Practical Red-Flag Check
Search the architectural set for chimney caps, decorative enclosures, metal hoods and rooftop boxes. For each factory-built chimney termination, ask where its specific shroud compatibility is documented. Resolve that question before appearance review becomes a fabrication commitment. Retain the approved detail in the owner's maintenance record so a future roof repair does not replace it with a look-alike assembly.
