'The breaker trips' tells the team what happened, not why. Treating every trip as an overloaded circuit can lead to an inappropriate replacement, an unresolved fault or an unjustified request for a larger protective device.

Overcurrent is the umbrella term
An overcurrent exceeds the relevant equipment rating or conductor ampacity. An overload concerns excessive loading along the intended circuit path for a duration that can produce overheating. A short circuit creates an unintended connection between points at different potentials. A ground fault is an unintended connection involving an ungrounded conductor and normally non-current-carrying conductive material or earth. These describe different conditions, not interchangeable names for a breaker trip.
A ground fault may not trip an ordinary breaker
Fault current depends on the circuit and path impedance. Some ground-fault currents are too small to operate conventional overload/short-circuit protection promptly. Ground-fault circuit-interrupter protection for people and equipment ground-fault protection have different purposes; neither should be casually equated with an ordinary breaker or with each other. Capture a useful event record
Without opening equipment or recreating a fault, record the affected equipment identifier, time, operating mode, alarm message and whether a change preceded the event. Useful context includes a new load, maintenance work, water exposure or a changed control sequence. Record what was observed separately from a proposed cause. 'Trips when cooling starts' is evidence; 'bad breaker' is an unverified conclusion.
What qualified investigation should reconcile
Actual equipment and protective-device identification against the approved design. - Load, starting/control behavior and applicable manufacturer information. - Conductors, connections, fault protection and environmental conditions within the investigation scope. - The responsible professional's findings and authorized corrective action. - Documented verification before return to normal service where required.
What not to do
Do not repeatedly reset a tripping device, bypass a safety function, increase its rating or alter trip settings just to keep equipment operating. A motor overload device, branch-circuit protective device and ground-fault protection do not perform identical jobs. This terminology article does not select conductor sizes, motor protection, settings or a repair method.
Client-facing decision rule
Ask for a documented cause and an authorized corrective scope - not simply a parts swap. If there is smoke, fire, arcing, electric shock or immediate danger, stay clear and contact emergency services and qualified responders as appropriate. Do not approach equipment to gather a better photograph. Nonurgent record review resumes only when safe.
