Daily Code Talk: Sparky Edition #008 - NEC Article 100: Equipment, Device, Utilization Equipment, Outlet, and Receptacle

A hardwired HVAC connection can be an outlet without being a receptacle. Article 100 terminology defines the electrical path and keeps schedules, plans, and field surveys from talking past each other.

The words equipment, device, outlet, and receptacle are often used casually. On a permit set or an existing-building survey, that casual usage can obscure how power actually gets from the wiring system to the load.

Technical Basis and Scope

This is NEC Article 100 terminology education based on the owner-supplied NEC 2026 source. It is not a project-specific code determination. Confirm the locally adopted NEC edition, amendments, AHJ interpretation, equipment listing, and actual installation before using it on a permit set or in the field.

Plain-English Control

Equipment is the broad term for items used as part of, or in connection with, an electrical installation. A device principally carries or controls electrical energy. Utilization equipment uses electrical energy to perform a function. An outlet is the point on the wiring system where current is taken to supply utilization equipment. A receptacle is a contact device installed at an outlet for connection of an attachment plug or compatible utilization equipment.

Field and Permit Impact

An AHU, RTU, pump, fan, chiller, heater, or appliance may be hardwired and still be supplied at an outlet. A receptacle is a specific plug-connection device; it is not a universal substitute for 'outlet.' That distinction matters when a requirement addresses receptacle outlets, equipment connections, branch circuits, disconnecting means, or maintenance power.

Where To Show It

Power plans: connection type and location. Equipment and panel schedules: voltage, circuit, connection method, and disconnect information. Details: hardwired versus cord-and-plug interfaces. Existing-condition records: circuit origin, outlet/connection point, disconnect, and equipment nameplate evidence.

Review Path

For every major load, identify what uses the energy, where the branch circuit terminates, whether the connection is hardwired or cord-and-plug, and what disconnecting or maintenance-power provisions apply. Reconcile those answers across M/E schedules, plans, risers, and field observations.

Do / Do Not

Do use the term that matches the actual condition. - Do identify hardwired versus cord-and-plug equipment before circuiting is finalized. - Do not use outlet and receptacle as synonyms. - Do not document only 'power exists' when surveying existing equipment.

Field Tip

At an existing unit, record the entire path: equipment nameplate, connection type, outlet/termination point, disconnect, circuit identification, and panel origin if verifiable. That record is more useful than a generic power symbol when renovation scope starts.
