Daily Code Talk: Sparky Edition #007 - NEC Article 100: Accessible vs. Readily Accessible

Access is not a symbol on a plan. Article 100 distinguishes an item that can be reached from one that can be reached promptly without unusual effort or access equipment.

A panel, disconnect, junction box, or rooftop controller can look coordinated on a floor plan and still fail the moment a person has to operate, inspect, or service it. The governing NEC requirement decides which access standard applies.

Technical Basis and Scope

This is NEC Article 100 terminology education based on the owner-supplied NEC 2026 source. It is not a project-specific code determination. Confirm the locally adopted NEC edition, amendments, AHJ interpretation, equipment listing, and actual installation before using it on a permit set or in the field.

Plain-English Control

Accessible equipment can be approached without barriers that effectively prevent access. Accessible wiring methods can be exposed or removed without damaging the building structure or finish. Readily accessible equipment can be reached quickly for operation, inspection, or servicing without actions such as using tools other than keys, climbing over or under obstacles, moving obstacles, or using a portable ladder.

Field and Permit Impact

For disconnects serving RTUs, AHUs, pumps, VFDs, and control equipment, distinguish physical reachability from normal, prompt access. Storage, roof geometry, ceiling access, architectural features, other MEP equipment, and the maintenance route can turn a coordinated symbol into a redline, service problem, or unsafe field workaround.

Where To Show It

Power plans: equipment and disconnect locations. Roof and mechanical plans: access path and adjacent equipment. Architectural plans and sections: doors, hatches, stairs, ceilings, and clear space. Details and notes: access panels, required service clearance, and conditions that must remain unobstructed.

Review Path

Locate the exact NEC requirement, identify its access term, and trace the actual path a person will take after the project is built. Test that path against final equipment, architectural features, permanent supports, and likely operational obstructions. Record assumptions about owner storage or maintenance access instead of relying on them silently.

Do / Do Not

Do coordinate access before equipment locations are finalized. - Do review access in plan, section, and field route. - Do not treat 'we can get to it somehow' as a design criterion. - Do not defer a required access condition to inspection-day improvisation.

Field Tip

Walk the route, not just the plan. Start at the normal point of entry and follow the path to the operating handle, cover, or service point. If a ladder, obstacle move, climb, or destructive removal is required, flag it for the applicable-code review.
