'It has a ground' is not an adequate equipment-connection specification. A replacement rooftop unit, pump or control panel may need a neutral for a particular load and an equipment grounding path for a different purpose. Treating the two as interchangeable can hide a coordination error until installation.

Identify function before appearance

A grounded conductor is intentionally connected to ground as part of a system or circuit. A neutral is defined by its connection to the system neutral point and its intended normal-current function. These concepts overlap in common systems but are not synonyms. The equipment grounding conductor (EGC) connects normally non-current-carrying metal parts into the effective ground-fault current path; it is not the intended normal load-current return conductor.

Why the neutral question belongs in procurement

A three-phase motor supplied line-to-line may not require a neutral, while controls or other loads within a packaged assembly may. The complete equipment wiring diagram and installation instructions settle the requirement - not a guess based on the largest motor. Reconcile the approved submittal with the feeder schedule and terminal arrangement before release to purchase.

Coordinate these records

One-line: source configuration and conductor functions. - Panel/feeder schedule: phases, neutral where required and equipment grounding provisions. - Equipment connection detail: manufacturer terminals and control-power arrangement. - Grounding/bonding detail: connection points appropriate to the actual source. - Existing-condition record: origin, destination, identification and verification limits.

Field observations that earn their keep

A visible conductor color is an observation, not proof of its function or correct termination. Older renovations can contain relabeling, undocumented alterations and unexpected source arrangements. An EGC also need not always be a separate wire: permitted wiring methods depend on the adopted rules and installation conditions. Qualified verification must establish the complete permitted path, not merely count green wires.

Avoid the expensive shortcut

Do not add a neutral-to-equipment connection at a convenient downstream enclosure to 'make a ground.' Improper connections can put normal current on metal paths. The responsible electrical professional must establish the permitted bonding arrangement for the service or separately derived system. This article does not provide bonding locations, conductor sizes or a field correction detail.

A useful handoff

Write the uncertainty precisely: 'Equipment control-power neutral requirement not reconciled with approved wiring diagram; electrical designer and vendor to resolve before feeder release.' This is actionable. 'Check grounding' is not. Carry the resolved requirement through the electrical schedule, submittal and installation record.
