A metal enclosure can have an earth connection without the installation having the effective fault-clearing path its design requires. The useful field question is not only 'Where is the ground rod?' It is also 'How does fault current return to the electrical source?'

Code basis and professional boundary

Confirm the jurisdiction, adopted edition, amendments, utility requirements, equipment instructions, and responsible professional before design or construction. Field observations do not establish electrical safety; only qualified personnel using the required safe-work procedures should access or test electrical equipment.

Three related functions

Grounding establishes a connection to earth. A grounding electrode provides that earth connection; a grounding electrode conductor connects the system or equipment to the electrode system. Bonding establishes electrical continuity between conductive parts. The effective ground-fault current path is an intentionally constructed low-impedance route back to the supply source that facilitates the protective device or ground-fault detector operating. Current can divide among available paths; it does not exclusively choose one path.

Earth is not the equipment fault-clearing solution

A grounding electrode alone does not replace the required effective path. In an ordinary grounded system, the equipment grounding and bonding arrangement provides the intended return route for an enclosure fault. The design must address the full path and protective system together. Specialized ungrounded or impedance-grounded systems need their own engineering basis; this explanation is not a universal installation diagram.

What meaningful documentation looks like

On the one-line and grounding details, distinguish the grounding electrode conductor, equipment grounding paths and applicable bonding jumpers. Coordinate service equipment, transformers, disconnects, motor/VFD packages and raceway transitions. Main, system, supply-side and equipment bonding jumpers have different applications; a note saying 'bond everything' does not resolve their sizing, placement or installation requirements.

Existing-condition observation checklist

Record equipment identifiers and the drawings used for comparison. - Note visible damage, corrosion, disconnected hardware or undocumented alterations without declaring a diagnosis. - Identify transitions or inaccessible locations that prevent a continuous record. - Request qualified review of the listed bonding means and permitted wiring method. - Keep the professional's findings, corrective scope and verification records together.

What an owner or contractor should not infer

Touching metal, a continuity indication or a visible conductor does not by itself prove a low-impedance fault path capable of its required duty. Do not improvise electrical testing, jumper around a problem or assume ductwork and water piping provide a suitable substitute path. Investigations must follow electrical safe-work requirements and the responsible professional's scope.

Practical closeout

Request a marked-up as-built detail identifying the accepted connections, any approved corrective work and the qualified verification record. Resolve missing evidence before calling an existing installation suitable for reuse. The NFPA 70 official code resource is the starting point for the applicable edition; project requirements extend beyond Article 100 definitions.
