A feeder can be correctly sized for load while the equipment at its end is unsuitable for the fault current available there. This is a procurement coordination issue as much as a calculation issue: the right rating must be part of the approved equipment before it arrives on site.

Keep the three values separate
Available fault current describes what the supply system can deliver at a particular point under the evaluated fault condition. Short-circuit current rating (SCCR) describes an equipment assembly's suitability for prospective fault current under its specified conditions. Interrupting rating describes a breaker or fuse's ability to interrupt current at its applicable voltage and test conditions. None is the normal operating load current.
The basic screening comparison
For a fully rated arrangement, the available fault current at the connection must not exceed the applicable equipment SCCR or protective-device interrupting rating. Compare the same voltage and rating basis. A large interrupting rating printed on a breaker does not automatically give the surrounding control panel, VFD, pump package or HVAC assembly that SCCR. Illustrative review - not a design calculation
Suppose a verified study identifies 22 kA available at a package. Its nameplate says 10 kA SCCR while its supply breaker is rated 65 kA interrupting at the applicable voltage. The breaker's rating does not close the package mismatch. Hold procurement or the proposed use for an engineered, manufacturer-supported resolution; do not relabel the assembly from this example.
Information to reconcile before release
Utility/source data, study date, assumptions and system operating configurations. - Fault-current value at the actual connection, not only at the service. - Complete assembly SCCR at the selected voltage. - Exact required upstream protective device, type/class, rating and other conditions. - One-line, equipment schedule, submittal and nameplate agreement.
Do not improvise a series-rated solution
Series combinations and current-limiting arrangements require their specific permitted, documented application. Do not subtract a fuse's advertised let-through value from available current or assume any upstream device raises equipment SCCR. Changing a specified protective device can invalidate a conditional rating. UL's panelboard and switchboard rating guide distinguishes fully rated and series-rated applications.
Field and change-control value
Photograph accessible nameplates only within permitted safe access; retain package model and protective-device identifiers. Missing or illegible SCCR is unresolved evidence, not a zero-risk condition. Recheck the engineering basis after transformer replacements, utility upgrades, added generators or distribution changes. An arc-flash label and an SCCR evaluation answer different questions; one does not replace the other, as UL explains.
