Before you calculate a service, size a feeder, select equipment, or coordinate power to mechanical systems, you need the foundation. That is NEC Chapter 1. It establishes the terminology, installation requirements, load-calculation framework, and energy-management rules used throughout the Code.

Article 120 Load Calculations sets the framework for branch-circuit, feeder, and service load calculations, and interfaces directly with motors, air-conditioning equipment, electric heating, appliances, EVSE, lighting, receptacles, and existing installations - this is where MEP equipment selections start driving electrical infrastructure sizing. Article 130 Energy Management Systems addresses which loads may be controlled, overload prevention, loads that cannot simply be shed or disconnected, and Power Control System monitoring, settings, and documentation.

A system can work electrically on paper and still fail coordination if the required working space and dedicated equipment space around it was never reserved.
