Electrical design does not end with conductor sizing and protection. Equipment suitability, future planning, and clear measurement conventions also affect the final installation - the subject of Part 5, the closing installment of this five-part Article 90 roadmap.

90.9 Units of Measurement: SI units are the NEC's preferred system, followed by inch-pound units. Hard conversion changes the actual measurement, soft conversion may change only the description, trade sizes follow recognized industry designations, and soft conversion cannot be used where safety would be affected.

Equipment gets modified in the field. Wiring gets sized for today's known loads and nothing more. Measurement conventions get assumed rather than confirmed. Each of these three sections closes a different gap between what was designed and what actually gets installed, inspected, and used over the life of the building.

Ask whether the equipment as installed still matches the equipment as listed, not just whether it matches the equipment as specified.

Confirm the equipment schedule states the listing basis for each major piece of equipment. Confirm the distribution design documents spare raceway, panel space, or pathway provisions tied to a specific known future need, not a generic allowance. Confirm any converted dimension states whether it is a hard or soft conversion.

Common Review Risk

A submittal shows equipment that was field-modified after listing - an added accessory, a altered enclosure, a relocated component - with no reevaluation of whether that modification is still covered by the original listing. The equipment looks approved because it once was, not because it currently is.

When To Escalate

Escalate any field-modified equipment without a documented reevaluation of its listing basis, any distribution design with zero spare capacity on a project with a known future phase, and any safety-related dimension where it is unclear whether a hard or soft conversion applies.

Field Tip

Ask three questions at every equipment and wiring decision: Is the equipment suitable as installed, can the system reasonably adapt, and are the drawings communicating the intended installation clearly? Verify the locally adopted NEC edition and AHJ amendments before applying this post to a real project.
