915.1 General
The installation of liquid-fueled stationary internal combustion engines and gas turbines must meet NFPA 37, including:
Exhaust
Fuel storage
Fuel piping
Stationary engine generator assemblies must meet UL 2200.
These are separate requirements. UL 2200 compliance does not replace the NFPA 37 installation review.
915.2 Powered equipment and appliances
Permanently installed equipment and appliances powered by internal combustion engines and turbines must be installed in accordance with the manufacturer instructions and NFPA 37. This section is not limited to generators.
Why it matters
Section 915 establishes the governing references, but does not provide the detailed exhaust, fuel-storage or piping criteria. Those requirements must be verified in the referenced standard and applicable manufacturer instructions, not inferred from the equipment schedule.
The mechanical and electrical reviews need to address the same selected assembly and its supporting systems.
Where to show it
Mechanical plans and sections: equipment location and exhaust routing
Fuel-system plans: storage and piping arrangement
Electrical schedule and submittal: generator assembly and UL 2200 compliance
Specifications: NFPA 37 installation basis and manufacturer instructions
Do
Identify the fuel type, manufacturer and model.
Verify the applicable NFPA 37 criteria before finalizing the layout.
Coordinate exhaust and fuel-system interfaces across disciplines.
Do not
Treat generator-assembly compliance as approval of the entire installation.
Assign generic clearances without verifying the applicable requirements.
Assume manufacturer instructions replace NFPA 37.
Field tip
For a generator replacement, compare the existing exhaust and fuel connections with the new model's installation instructions before accepting the substitution. Matching kW does not establish an equivalent installation. Next: #186 — IMC 916 Pool and Spa Heaters.
In Florida
In Florida the mechanical code is the 2023 FBC-Mechanical (8th Edition), which is based on the 2021 IMC and generally follows the same Chapter 9 numbering. Confirm the Florida section text, any Florida amendment and the referenced standard editions before relying on a 2024 IMC detail. The 9th Edition applies to permit applications on or after 12/31/2026 (state adoption pending).
Questions to settle before design
Which fuel, how much storage, and where will it be stored?
Where will the exhaust discharge relative to openings, intakes, walkways and the neighbor's property?
Which generator assembly (manufacturer and model) is the basis of design on both the mechanical and electrical sheets?
MasterBuild field checklist
Compare the installed nameplate with the UL 2200 submittal.
Walk the exhaust route from the engine to the discharge point and compare it with the plans.
Trace the fuel piping from storage to the unit.
On a replacement, check that the new model did not change the fuel, exhaust or cooling-air connections.
MasterBuild recommendation: process steps for design and site review, not code text.
