A fireplace stove or solid-fuel room heater is not just an appliance selection. The equipment, chimney connection and hearth extension each have their own compliance path.
905.1 General
Fireplace stoves and solid-fuel-type room heaters must be listed and labeled and installed in accordance with the conditions of the listing. Fireplace stoves → UL 737. Solid-fuel-type room heaters → UL 1482. Fireplace inserts → listed and labeled in accordance with UL 1482 and installed per manufacturer instructions. New wood-burning residential hydronic heaters must also be EPA certified.
905.2 Connection to fireplace
When a solid-fuel appliance connects to a chimney flue serving a fireplace, the connection must comply with IMC 801.7 and 801.10. Section 905 is not the end of the review path.
905.3 Hearth extensions
Hearth extensions for fireplace stoves must follow the stove listing. They must also be readily distinguishable from the surrounding floor area. Listed and labeled hearth extensions must comply with UL 1618.
