A masonry fireplace may appear on the mechanical plans, but Chapter 9 does not contain the full construction criteria. IMC 902 sends part of the review directly to the Building Code.
902.1 General
Masonry fireplaces must be constructed in accordance with the International Building Code. The IMC identifies the equipment; the actual masonry construction requirements are handled through the IBC. Masterbuild seals MEP. We do not seal masonry fireplace construction.
902.2 Fireplace accessories
Listed and labeled fireplace accessories must be installed in accordance with the conditions of their listing, follow the manufacturer’s installation instructions, and comply with UL 907. An accessory is not automatically acceptable because it physically fits.
Field tip
For specialty equipment, “listed” is not just a product characteristic. The installation itself has to remain within the conditions of that listing. Hub: 902 hub. Next: IMC 903.
