The Article 200 series
Across four posts, we connect these topics to project decisions:
Insulation, continuity, supply connections and neutral arrangements
Grounded-conductor identification
White and gray insulation and permitted reidentification
Terminal identification and polarity
Each post connects the code discussion to a drawing, submittal, inspection or field-verification task.
Why it matters
"Reuse existing wiring" leaves questions unanswered. Which circuit supplies it? What conductors are present? What does the proposed equipment require? For replacement equipment, compare the manufacturer's connection requirements with the existing conductor arrangement, including controls and accessories.
Do
Document the circuit source and required conductor functions.
Coordinate panel schedules, wiring notes and equipment connection data.
Assign field verification to qualified personnel using appropriate safe work practices.
Do not
Treat conductor color as proof of function.
Leave "verify in field" undefined.
Assume replacement equipment has identical connection requirements.
Field tip
Make the verification task specific: identify the circuit source, document the conductor arrangement, compare it with the proposed connection requirements, and assign responsibility for resolving discrepancies. Next: #039 — NEC 2026 Article 200 Grounded Conductors and Neutrals (1/4).
Questions to settle before design
Which circuit supplies the wiring proposed for reuse?
What conductors are present, and what does the new equipment require?
Who verifies the existing conductors, and when?
MasterBuild field checklist
Use qualified personnel and appropriate safe work practices before tracing conductors.
Record conductor colors, sizes and terminations circuit by circuit.
Compare the record with the manufacturer's connection requirements.
MasterBuild recommendation: process steps for design and site review, not code text.

Code basis and applicability
Study edition: NEC 2026 (NFPA 70). Florida enforces NEC 2020 under the 2023 Florida Building Code (8th Edition). The 9th Edition (published; state adoption pending) adopts NEC 2023 for permit applications on or after 12/31/2026. Section numbers and some rules differ between editions. Verify the edition that governs your permit. Educational reference to NEC 2026 Chapter 2, Article 200. Check the complete NFPA 70 text, the locally adopted edition and amendments, the authority having jurisdiction, and the selected equipment instructions before project use.
