Plain-English breakdown
Insulation: an insulated grounded conductor's insulation must be suitable, except for color, for the same circuit's ungrounded conductors on systems up to 1,000 volts; for solidly grounded neutral systems above 1,000 volts, the minimum is 600 volts per 270.27(A).
Continuity: the grounded conductor's continuity cannot depend on a metal enclosure, raceway or cable armor.
Supply connection: the premises grounded conductor needs a direct electrical connection to the supply grounded conductor. A stated exception permits listed interactive inverters identified for distributed generation to connect without a grounded conductor when the connected premises wiring or utility system includes one.
Neutral use: a neutral cannot serve more than one branch circuit, more than one multiwire branch circuit, or more than one set of feeder ungrounded conductors unless specifically permitted elsewhere in the Code.
Grouping: where an enclosure contains multiple neutrals of different circuits, identify or group each circuit's grounded conductors with its ungrounded conductors at one or more points inside the enclosure. Exceptions cover obvious grouping from a cable or raceway unique to the circuit, and branch-circuit pass-throughs without a loop, splice or termination as described in 314.16(B)(1).
Why it matters
A circuit number does not establish whether the existing neutral arrangement suits the proposed equipment.
Do
Document the source, conductor functions and equipment connection requirements.
Confirm the applicable permission before accepting a shared neutral.
Do not
Assume every grounded conductor is a neutral.
Approve reuse from color or circuit labels alone.
Field tip
Have qualified personnel verify circuit associations using appropriate safe work practices. Resolve discrepancies before specifying reuse. Next: #040 — NEC 2026 Article 200 Identifying Grounded Conductors (2/4).
Questions to settle before design
Is any neutral shared, and which permission allows it?
Do the grounded conductors in each enclosure stay with their circuits?
Does the premises grounded conductor connect directly to the supply grounded conductor?
MasterBuild field checklist
Use qualified personnel and appropriate safe work practices to verify circuit associations.
Flag shared neutrals and record the permission relied on.
Check that continuity does not depend on a metal enclosure, raceway or cable armor.
MasterBuild recommendation: process steps for design and site review, not code text.

Code basis and applicability
Study edition: NEC 2026 (NFPA 70). Florida enforces NEC 2020 under the 2023 Florida Building Code (8th Edition). The 9th Edition (published; state adoption pending) adopts NEC 2023 for permit applications on or after 12/31/2026. Section numbers and some rules differ between editions. Verify the edition that governs your permit. Educational reference to NEC 2026 Sections 200.1 and 200.4–200.6. Check the complete NFPA 70 text, the locally adopted edition and amendments, the authority having jurisdiction, and the selected equipment instructions before project use.
