914.4 Temperature control

Provide a thermostat that limits the room temperature to 194°F (90°C). If it is not integral to the heater, place its heat-sensing element within 6 inches of the finished ceiling. Attach and protect a capillary tube-and-bulb assembly as the section requires. Show the sensor location after finishes are accounted for.

914.4.1 Timer, when provided

If a timer controls main burner operation, its operating period is limited to 1 hour and its control is outside the sauna room. This conditional provision does not itself require a timer on every heater. The equipment timer limit does not permit a 1-hour occupant exposure.

914.5 Room opening

Provide a ventilation opening into the sauna room at least 4 by 8 inches near the top of the door. Dimension the opening and locate it on the actual door or room detail.

914.5.1 Exterior warning notice

The model code calls for a permanent, approved-material warning mechanically attached outside the sauna, with contrasting text at least 1/4 inch high. The prescribed notice warns against exceeding 30 minutes and advises those in poor health to consult a physician. Use the exact notice text from the locally adopted code on the project detail.

The one- and two-family dwelling exception applies to the warning-notice provision, not to every requirement in §914.

What changes in the field

Review the controls detail, door opening and signage separately. Coordinate the selected heater and completed ceiling height before placing a nonintegral sensor.

Field check

Dimension a nonintegral temperature sensor from the finished ceiling.

If a timer controls the main burner, check its operating limit and outside-room location.

Detail the ventilation opening and any required exterior warning notice.
