Once a mechanical draft device enters the venting path, the permit set must do more than draw a fan and a vent. It has to establish the system's evaluated equipment, pressure condition, construction, and fail-safe operating sequence.

Technical Basis and Scope

This article explains the owner-supplied IMC 2024 provisions as model-code education. The adopted code, amendments, appliance and vent listings, manufacturer instructions, existing conditions, fuel-gas requirements, and AHJ direction control a real project.

Plain-English Control

The owner-supplied IMC 804.3 content identifies forced- and induced-draft systems as listed and labeled in accordance with UL 378. Under 804.3.1, forced-draft systems and the positive-pressure portions of induced-draft systems must be gas tight. Under 804.3.2, a power exhauster serving an automatically fired appliance must be electrically connected so the appliance cannot operate when the exhauster is not running.

Field and Permit Impact

Forced and induced draft are not interchangeable labels. Pressure can change along the vent path. A positive-pressure portion with incompatible joints, fittings, seals, or assembly method can leak combustion products. A powered exhauster shown without a proved permissive/shutdown sequence can leave a burner operating after exhaust capability is lost.

Review Path

Identify draft type, airflow direction, and every point where the pressure condition changes. Match the complete vent assembly to its listing and manufacturer instructions. Then trace the control sequence from a loss of exhauster operation to the burner firing enable; assign the control interface and test witness before issue.

Do / Do Not

Do show the pressure condition and listed assembly, not only a generic vent line. - Do coordinate power and controls with the appliance and exhauster. - Do not assume all induced-draft portions are negative pressure. - Do not leave fail-safe shutdown to field interpretation.

Field Tip

Draw the airflow arrow through the entire system and mark positive-pressure segments. Then perform the same exercise on the controls diagram: if the exhauster loses power, what exact signal removes permission to fire? If the answer is not documented, the design is not ready for functional verification.
