When a manually fired appliance depends on mechanical draft, the critical coordination question is what happens while fuel is still burning and the draft device stops. A fan symbol and an electrical circuit do not explain that failure condition. Architects, mechanical designers, electrical designers, and installers need a shared sequence before equipment is purchased.
Technical Basis and Project Use
This is 2024 IMC Section 804.3.8 model-code education. Confirm the adopted edition, amendments, fuel and appliance classification, manufacturer instructions, fire/life-safety requirements, and authority having jurisdiction (AHJ) before project use. The detailed failure-response procedure belongs to the selected system and responsible design professionals.
Three Controls That Must Work Together
The mechanical draft device must carry listing and labeling to UL 378 and be installed as its manufacturer directs. A warning device must give both a visible indication and an audible signal when the draft device fails or electrical power is lost while it is turned on. That warning device needs battery backup if it receives power from building wiring. A smoke detector is also required in the room containing the appliance or fireplace; it likewise needs battery backup when building-wired. The conditional backup requirement applies to each device individually.
What the Requirement Does Not Establish
Battery backup for a warning device does not establish backup power for the draft fan. A smoke detector is not the same as a carbon-monoxide detector and does not replace other applicable detection requirements. A fan-running light also does not, by itself, demonstrate that the required failure warning is provided. Identify how the selected system detects each required condition and how the occupant receives the warning.
Drawing and Submittal Evidence
Show the appliance and draft-device identification on the mechanical plan and schedule. Include a control diagram naming the monitored conditions, visible/audible warning outputs, power sources, and response to power loss. Coordinate smoke-detector location with electrical and fire/life-safety drawings. The submittal should identify compatible device models, manufacturer wiring information, alarm locations, service access, and the party responsible for startup and demonstration.
Field Observations and Closeout
Compare installed labels and model numbers with the approved submittal. Confirm that the room detector, visible indicator, audible warning, and specified backup components are present and accessible. Record discrepancies before operation. A qualified installer should demonstrate the manufacturer-approved test sequence and document the outcome; do not create an uncontrolled live-fire or power-loss test. Give the owner operating instructions, warning meanings, battery-maintenance information, and the approved response procedure.

Read the sequence without looking at the drawings: can you explain how draft-device failure and power loss are detected, how both warnings operate, and which components remain functional on their specified backup? If that explanation depends on an undocumented assumption, resolve it before closeout. This can prevent a late controls change after finishes are complete.
